hongbao (红包), or Chinese red envelope, is a gift of money presented in a red packet, symbolizing good luck, energy, and happiness. Primarily given during the Lunar New Year, weddings, and birthdays, they are used to convey blessings and, historically, to ward off evil spirits. The tradition also extends to digital, cashless payments.

Key Aspects of Hongbao:

  • Recipients: Traditionally, married couples or elders give these packets to children, younger generations, or unmarried individuals.
  • Cultural Variations: Known as hóngbāo (Mandarin), lai see (Cantonese), or ang pow (Hokkien).
  • Digital Transformation: With technology, these are now frequently sent as virtual "WeChat Red Envelopes".
  • Amounts: Money is often given in amounts that signify good fortune, such as even numbers (excluding 4, which is associated with death), with a preference for numbers containing 8.
  • Design: Traditional envelopes feature gold Chinese calligraphy symbols for luck, wealth, and prosperity, with modern versions sometimes featuring 3D designs.
  • Significance: The red color signifies happiness and luck. The act of giving is intended to bestow blessings on the receiver, making it more about the gesture than the money itself.
  • Occasions:

While most common during the Spring Festival / Chinese New Year, they are also given at weddings, birthdays, for baby showers, or as work bonuses
