Since January 14th, 2021 West Kalimantan Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) officially announced West Kalimantan as a disaster preparedness area. This status was updated due to the wideness and the flood level. As reported in the official account of West Kalimantan Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) flood level was around 30 centimeters until 3 meters. For example, in Hulu Sungai Utara the flood level is 30 centimeters and the highest is in Banjarbaru which has a 3 meters flood level.
"The causes of the flood during investigation now, we hope we can find how and why this flood happened," said Roy Rizali, the chief of West Kalimantan Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
Several causes made the flood happen, some speculations spread such as mass cutting trees, uncontrollable peatland, and heavy rains. Dwikorita, the chief of the Indonesian Agency for Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical (BMKG) as quoted from Media Indonesia Editorial January 18th, 2021 said that the heavy rains on West Kalimantan had been predicted since November 2020 through BMKG's official account such as Twitter and Telegram. Dwikorita continues "BMKG does not have the right to insist on the local government to act from the information which was used to prevent the disaster or prepare the affected civilians".
