One school in the District of Montclair, North Jersey, United States, fulfills a request by Muslim students to include Eid al-Fitr in the school calendar. This request was made by a fifth grader in Bradford.

Laila Khan, 11, the student who made the request has previously collected 2,000 signatures on the change.org page, through a petition that Eid be counted as a holiday in the school calendar. Laila then presented her request in front of the School Board.

Eid al-Fitr, Laila said, is an Islamic holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Every Muslim will pray in the morning wearing his best clothes. After the prayer, every Muslim visits his family and neighbors to provide special Eid dishes.

Montclair is one of North Jersey's growing school districts. Montclair includes Teaneck, Paterson, Pompton Lakes, and Jersey City, which have added Eid to the school calendar. Eid al-Fitr next year will fall on May 3, 2022.

Laila revealed that she started her petition while talking to the Principal of Bradford School, Frances Aboushhi. Aboushi then recommended the Khan family petition. Laila also hopes that the Mountclair district will also add other religious holidays such as Diwali, a Hindu holiday to the school calendar.

On June 5, the school appreciated Laila who expressed her hope. Principal Latifah Johnson said the same request had been made several years ago. Supervisor Jonathon Ponds praised Laila's move as a change effort.
