Giving charity is something that everyone should do. By giving charity, we can lighten the burden for the less fortunate. In Islam, the rules regarding alms have been clearly regulated, which one is an obligation or a sunnah.
The Chief Marketing Officer of Rumah Zakat, Irvan Nugraha, said that in Islam, alms are divided into obligatory and sunnah. The charity that must be done is zakat, and what is not mandatory or sunnah is infaq.
Both zakat and sunnah, there are best spending times and there are rules. Irvan said that zakat must be carried out by a Muslim who has assets, and is included in the category of the minimum zakat limit.
Zakat itself is divided into several types and has its own time to fulfill it. First, zakat mal or property zakat. This zakat is mandatory for people who have treasures stored for 1 year equivalent to 85 grams of gold. The amount of zakat is 2.5% of the stored property.
Then zakat income, this zakat must be done by people who have income above the nisab limit. Income zakat can be paid per month, 2.5% of income per month. In addition, this zakat can be paid annually, which is 2.5% of the total income for one year.
"So it can be per month, or per year, both are 2.5%. You can choose between the two," Irvan told CNBC Indonesia, Wednesday (15/05/2019).
In addition, there is also zakat of the soul (fitrah) which must be carried out by all able-bodied Muslims. This zakat should be done before the Eid prayer. Irvan said that because rice is the staple food of the Indonesian people, the amount of zakat is equivalent to 2.5 kilograms of rice. Some say zakat fitrah is zakat breaker Ramadan.
"If it is in the form of money, for example, we can buy rice for Rp. 15,000 per kilo. So the equivalent of 2.5 kilograms is Rp. 37,500 for zakat," he explained.
