The muslim community in the United States continues to grow. At least this is evident from the emergence of mosques with diverse historical backgrounds, one of which is al-Tawhid Mosque in San Francisco city which was formerly a church.

KH Ali Musthafa Yaqub in the book Islam in America recounts his experience traveling to the United States (USA). He wrote in the book that on 26 Ramadan 1429 Hijri, there were a number of mosques that he visited.

First, is al-Tawhid Mosque. It is said, said KH Ali, the mosque was originally a church or hall that was later renovated into a mosque. The mosque is run by people of Yemeni origin.

Second, the Fiji Muslim Community Mosque in San Francisco. As the name suggests, the mosque is run by Fijians of Indian descent. KH Ali said that the imams of the mosque were very young, of whom there were four hafidz who became imams and all came from Afghanistan.

The Fiji Mosque was originally a church building, or the grounds belonged to the church. Because next to it there is still a church. KH Ali told me that such things are not new, because in the historical record many churches are turned into mosques in a number of regions of the world.

Like the Byzantine Church in Damascus Syria, and most famously the Hagia Sophia church whose function often changes. It was last converted back into a mosque by the current Turkish Government.

Third, The Dar Al-Salam Mosque which is under the Islamic Society of San Francisco. The mosque, which is adjacent to the building of these shops, is quite crowded with worshippers. Around the mosque, many homeless people are wandering around.
