Ibn Rusyd or full name Abu Walid Muhammad Ibn Ahmad was born in 1126. He is the greatest philosopher ever born in the history of Islam. Its influence is not only widespread in the Islamic world, but also among people in Europe. In the West, he was known as Averroes.
Ibnu Ruayd was born in Cordova, the capital of Andalusia. His grandfather was a notable fiqh and jurist. In addition to serving as the grand imam at the Jami' Cordova Mosque, he was also appointed chief justice (qadi al-jama'ah). After his death, judge position was passed by his son, Ibn Rushd's father.
Seen here, Ibn Rusyd was born into a family of Fiqh expert and judges. It was not surprising that one of his opus notables, Bidayat al-Mujtahid wa Nihayat al-Muqtasid, is his opus in the field of Fiqh. This book is a comparative study of Islamic law, in which ibn Rusyd expounded his opinions by expressing the opinions of the imams of Fiqh.
Ibn Rusy is doctor
He is also a doctor and astronomer. However, this position is unpopular than as a philosopher. He is considered one of the greatest doctors of his time. He was the first to explain the function of the retina and the first to explain that the first smallpox attack would create subsequent immunity in the person concerned.
As a writer on the subject of medicine, he compiled an encyclopedia entitled Kitab al-Kulliyat fi al-Tibb. The encyclopedia consists of seven books dealing with anatomy, physiology, general pathology, diagnosis, materia medica, health and general therapy. As the author of astronomical issues, he prepared a summary of Ptolemy's Almagest and also compiled a work on the movement of celestial bodies entitled Kitab fi al-Harakah al-Aflak.
Ibnu Rusyd had represented the culmination of Muslim thought in a very essential direction: understanding Aristotle. Arsitoteles, to Ibn Rushd, was a very great thinker, the greatest philosopher ever born, who had absolutely no fault in his thoughts.
The findings in philosophy and science have not been a significant and substantial change from what Aristotle had elaborated on. Ibn Rusyd greatly admired Aristotle's logic. He stated, "Without it, one could not be happy and it is a pity that Plato and Socrates have wasted it.
Because of his high respect for Aristotle, Ibn Rusyd had to pay a very high price. He was attacked by orthodox for his attempts to align Aristotle's teachings with Islam. Theologians felt Ibn Rushd, in order to reconcile Islamic dogma with Aristotle's philosophy, had tarnished the teachings of Islam. They were very angry with Ibn Rusyd and accused him of apostates.
