Luhut Engages China to Develop Toba Lake Tourism

Coinciding 70 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and China, the government is encouraging investment from China to enter the tourism sector because it is developing priority destinations.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said Indonesia and China have good friendly relations so that the two countries can create collaboration and cooperation in various sectors."One of it is to restore our economy in the tourism sector," he said in an official statement, Saturday (19/12/2020).

Luhut has conveyed when giving a speech at the "Indonesia-China Tourism and Investment Forum for 5 Key Super Priority Tourism Destinations." The activity was held in Toba Regency, North Sumatra by still paying attention to health protocols.

He said the various collaborations discussed included strategic investment, trade, tourism, infrastructure and health related to the Covid-19 pandemic which was able to boost the economy and quality of life for Indonesians after the pandemic.

"The meeting between the two countries was a proof of the seriousness of cooperation between Indonesia and China to restore the national economy, especially in the tourism sector," he explained.

Luhut explained the government is focusing on building five Super Priority Tourism (DPSP) destinations, namely Lake Toba, Labuan Bajo, Borobudur, Mandalika, and Likupang within the framework of quality tourism.

To achieve an optimal quality tourism concept, the development of 5 DPSP will involve collaboration with various parties, for example China as one of Indonesia's friendly countries.

Virtually, China's Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Zhang Xu expressed his appreciation to the Indonesian government for its willingness to continue to build collaborations to restore economic conditions during the Covid 19 pandemic.

"The PRC agreed to continue to carry out international collaboration to handle economic recovery due to the Covid-19 pandemic, promote cooperation in the economic and bilateral trade fields of the two countries, especially in supporting tourism to increase economic growth and people's welfare," he explained.
