Masjid al-haram Mosque: A Series of Attacks from Bombs to Knife Men

The Khatib of Friday prayers at Masjid al-haram Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia were attacked while being an Imam. The incident occurred during a Friday prayer (21/5).

 

Masjid al-haram Mosque has been the target of several attacks by unidentified people in the past four years. Here's a sequence of events.

 

In 2017, the holy mosque in Mecca was nearly destroyed by a suicide bomb attack. The incident took place on June 25, 2017, ahead of eid al-Fitr celebrations. The attack was broken successfully by Saudi police. Police ambush a bomb designer at a hideout in Ajyad al-Masafi, Mecca.

 

The man refused to turn himself in. He detonated a suicide bomb and destroyed the building. Six people were injured in the blast.

 

"The explosion caused part of the building where the man was hiding to collapse. Six expatriate citizens were injured and taken to hospital, and five security personnel suffered minor injuries," the Saudi Press official said to CNN News

 

The attack occurred again last year, precisely March 30, 2020. At the time, social media buzzed with videos showing a man brandishing a knife. The incident took place on the first floor of Masjid al-haram Mosque after asar prayer. The man swung a knife while shouting in support of the ISIS-style terrorist group.

 

Haram security forces arrested the man. The Saudi authorities confirmed the man was being processed by law.

 

In the same year, precisely October 31, 2020, Hyundai cars broke through Gate 89 of Masjid al-haram Mosque at around 9:25 p.m. local time. There were no casualties in the incident. Security forces arrested the man who was driving the car. Mecca authorities called the driver in an unnatural state and will be processed by law.

 

Friday (21/5), the incident of attack again occurred in Masjid al-haram Mosque. The attack occurred as Sheikh Baleelah led Friday prayers. A man wearing ihram suddenly ran towards the pulpit. He held a stick behind his body. When he was near the pulpit, he pulled out his cane. However, security forces guarding the area around the pulpit dismissed the attack.

 

Arab News reported that the man was immediately secured by police and Haram officers. Security forces immediately processed the man legally.
