The Hijri calendar there are four sacred months, namely Dzulqaidah, Dhu'l-Hijah, Muharram, and Rajab. It is called haraam because the four months are highly respected, and Muslims are forbidden to fight in them.

Muharram, which means forbidden or highly respected, is indeed a month of truce or a month of peace. This shows that Muslims everywhere should always be peaceful, should not wage the fire of war if not fought first.

Muslims should respect and interpret Muharram with a spirit full of peace and harmony. Because, Prophet Muhammad SAW on the Khutbah Hajj Wada-which is also in the haram month, urging his people not to be hostile to each other, act violently, or fight each other.

The essence of Muharram spirit is self-control in order to create peace and tranquility of life, both physically, socially, and spiritually. Therefore, in the month of Muharram the Prophet Muhammad encouraged his people to fast sunnah: Ashura (fasting on the tenth day of this month).

From Abu Hurayrah, the Prophet Muhammad said, "The most important fast after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Muharam. And the most important prayer after obligatory prayer is the night prayer." (HR Muslim).

Ibn 'Abbas said, "I do not see the Prophet Muhammad intensifying his fast other than Ramadan, except the fast of Ashura." (Narrated by Al-Bukhaari). In another hadith narrated from Abi Qatadah, the Prophet said, "Fasting Ashura can remove the sin of the previous year." (HR Muslim).

Through fasting sunnah, Muslims are trained and used to be able to refrain from being easily colonized by lusts, including lusts of revenge and anger, so that peace and peace of life can be realized in the plurality of nation and state.
